Time2Talk urges young people to take health seriously
In the light of shocking government figures recently released showing a 58% increase in sexually transmitted diseases in the under 16’s over a four year period, a Daventry based charity is promoting its Chlamydia screening programme to young people across Northamptonshire.
Time2Talk is a counselling based service based at The Abbey in Daventry and one of the key services it offers is screening for Chlamydia in 15 – 24 year olds. It’s an infection which can often go undetected and if left untreated may result in pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility.
Understandably many young people find it embarrassing to discuss STI’s, but according to Andy Nixon, Manager of Time2Talk, their service is totally non judgemental and above all, confidential. “We offer a complimentary and alternative solution to visiting a GP. With 12 once weekly school and community based drop-ins in Daventry District and South Northants including The Abbey, anyone with a concern can just call in and have the test. It’s a simple urine sample and you don’t need to come in to get the results, as results can be texted to your mobile phone. Anyone that catches ‘the love bug’, currently one in 10 people, can arrange treatment with a member of the NHS treatment team here at Time2Talk.”
Time2Talk’s Chlamydia screening is a great example of how the NHS works in partnership with the charity sector. Their Chlamydia screening service has grown steadily over the last two and a half years, with 30% more screenings now taking place than in December 2007, when the programme started. Currently, between 28 – 34 screenings are conducted monthly, but Nixon would like to drive this figure higher. “We offer the service to every young person who visits us, but clearly, not everybody takes up the offer. To encourage this vital health screening, at the moment any 15 – 24 year old who takes advantage of this free service will receive a £10 book voucher whilst stocks last..”
